Host Venue indiaThe GANSID Global Congress 2026 will be hosted in India — a decision grounded in scientific urgency and regional relevance. Hosting the Congress in India is both epidemiologically and strategically significant. The WHO South-East Asia Region (SEAR) carries one of the highest global burdens of hemoglobinopathies, particularly sickle cell disease (SCD) and thalassemia.

Regional Disease Burden

  • India has one of the largest global populations affected by sickle cell disease.
  • High-prevalence states include Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Gujarat, and parts of Telangana.
  • SCD disproportionately affects tribal and underserved populations, aligning with equity-focused global health priorities.
  • The broader SEAR region—including countries such as Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka—carries a significant thalassemia burden.
  • High birth prevalence and large population size translate into substantial long-term treatment demand.
  • India has also launched a National Sickle Cell Elimination Mission (by 2047) and Thalassemia-free India (by 2035), signaling strong political will, increasing screening programs, and expanding therapeutic access—creating a timely and strategic environment for engagement.
