Andrew Zapfel, MPH, PMP, is a global health practitioner with expertise in community engagement, policy and advocacy, and health system strengthening. He is currently the Deputy Director of Global Programs and Alliances at the American Society of Hematology (ASH) and oversees a broad range of global sickle cell disease (SCD) activities. These include the oversight and implementation of the Consortium on Newborn Screening in Africa (CONSA), a demonstration study on newborn screening and early clinical interventions for SCD in seven countries in sub-Saharan Africa. He is also a founding member and interim board member of the World Coalition on SCD, a global private partnership meant to galvanize support for the integration and scale-up of SCD services in low-resource countries.
Prior to working at ASH, Andrew had worked throughout sub-Saharan Africa and Asia on HIV, family planning, maternal health, and human rights projects. Andrew is currently based in Washington, DC, USA. He is an adjunct instructor for the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, where he is also pursuing his Doctorate in Public Health.
