
Dr. Catherine Chunda-Liyoka
Dr. Chunda-Liyoka is a Consultant Paediatrician and Head of Paediatric Haematology, as well as part of the Paediatric Infectious Disease Department at the University Teaching Hospitals–Children’s Hospital (UTHs-CH) in Lusaka, Zambia. She specializes in the clinical management of complex paediatric haematological and infectious diseases, with a particular focus on sickle cell disease (SCD), haemophilia, aplastic anaemia, HIV, and tuberculosis.
She serves as an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Zambia (UNZA) and an Honorary Fellow in International Public Health at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM). Within the Ministry of Health, she is the national focal person for SCD, a member of the haemophilia taskforce, and a national trainer and mentor in paediatric SCD, HIV, infection prevention, and palliative care.
Dr. Chunda-Liyoka is an active researcher, serving as Principal Investigator, Co-Principal Investigator, and Program Director on several research and training initiatives. She is Zambia’s National Coordinator for the American Society of Hematology (ASH) newborn screening consortium (CONSA) and contributes to major collaborations including SPARCO (SHAZ), SPAN, SickleInAfrica, ARISE, PACTS, AFREhealth, SPARKLE, and the Sickle Cell Ontology Network (SCDO). Her research interests include blood disorders, paediatric malignancies, infectious diseases, public health, and implementation science.
