
Dr. Biree Andemariam
Professor of Medicine & Director, New England Sickle Cell Institute
Dr. Biree Andemariam is a Professor of Medicine and the American Red Cross Endowed Chair in Transfusion Medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. She is an internationally recognized clinician, educator, and advocate, and serves as Founding Director of the New England Sickle Cell Institute (NESCI) and Director of the Connecticut Bleeding Disorders Center.
Through NESCI, she provides comprehensive care for over 350 adults with sickle cell disease (SCD), while advancing clinical and translational research. Dr. Andemariam has led multiple global SCD clinical trials and has extensive expertise in trial design, implementation, and patient-centered outcomes.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, she chaired an international committee that developed widely adopted guidelines for managing SCD patients. She is a former Chief Medical Officer of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, where she received the Chairman’s Award three times for her leadership in advocacy, education, and national program development.
Dr. Andemariam is also a member of the 2023 Lancet Commission, contributing to global strategies to improve outcomes for individuals living with SCD by 2040.
