Advocacy Relations Consultant
Dr. Samuel Misiani Mbunya, BMS, PgDRes, MBA, DBA is a Kenyan health advocate, researcher, program leader and Advocacy Relations Consultant with extensive experience in blood disorders, particularly sickle cell disease and hemophilia, across Kenya and Sub-Saharan Africa.
For more than a decade, Dr. Mbunya has worked at the intersection of patient advocacy, healthcare delivery, education, community engagement and health-systems strengthening, supporting initiatives aimed at improving early diagnosis, access to comprehensive care, patient education and the meaningful participation of patients and caregivers in healthcare decision-making.
He has played a significant role in the development and coordination of Project ECHO programs in Sickle Cell Disease, Classical Hematology and Blood Disorders Advocacy, bringing together healthcare professionals, patient organizations, advocates and international experts to expand access to specialist knowledge and strengthen multidisciplinary learning across Africa. His work has involved collaboration with AMPATH Kenya, Innovative Hematology Inc., Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, patient organizations and other national and international partners.
A strong proponent of patient-centered advocacy, Dr. Mbunya has contributed to initiatives that strengthen patient organizations, develop advocacy leadership and amplify lived experience in healthcare and policy discussions. His work increasingly focuses on connecting three critical dimensions of healthcare improvement: clinical and technical expertise, patient and community experience, and advocacy and policy engagement.
Dr. Mbunya’s academic interests focus on strategic leadership, health systems and the delivery of high-quality care for people living with blood disorders in resource-limited settings. He holds a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), with doctoral research examining the strategic leadership roles of hospital leaders in delivering high-quality sickle cell disease and hemophilia care in Kenya.
He has contributed to scientific and professional presentations on sickle cell disease, hemophilia, patient advocacy and the Project ECHO model and has participated in regional and international forums advancing equitable care for people living with blood disorders.
Dr. Mbunya is particularly passionate about translating knowledge into action—connecting patients, communities, healthcare professionals, researchers, institutions and policymakers to develop sustainable solutions that improve access to diagnosis, treatment and patient-centered care.
His professional philosophy is grounded in a simple principle: sustainable healthcare improvement is achieved not only by strengthening clinical services, but also by ensuring that patients are informed, empowered and meaningfully represented in the decisions that affect their lives.
