Riyad is a lead member of the thalassemia community in Canada and has served in prominent roles on the Board of Directors for the Thalassemia Foundation of Canada for over 25 years. He is dedicated to advocating for optimal care for thalassemia and hemoglobinopathy patients across Canada and globally.
Riyad has been instrumental in building and maintaining strong collaborative networks with various partners and stakeholders including health authorities, and hospitals. Riyad has also been serving on the Board of Directors of Thalassemia International Federation since 1998 and has been appointed Honorary Board Member in 2018.
He is also a Board Member of the Canadian Organization for Rare Disorders since 2015, and a Board Member of the Network for Rare Blood Disorder Organizations (2017-2022). Riyad, a passionate and outspoken thalassemia patient acted as the patient’s voice at forums and meetings at the national, regional, and international levels for many years
