Senator Jane Cordy introduced the National Inherited Blood Disorders Bill at the Canadian Senate on September 19, 2024. This move has made Canada the first country in the world to recognize inherited blood disorders in this way.
Inherited blood disorders are a group of serious blood disorders associated with significant morbidity and mortality and requiring early diagnosis and prompt implementation of comprehensive and preventive therapies.
With the introduced Bill, we believe that there will be improved visibility and awareness of these disorders resulting in reduced stigma experienced by the affected and their equitable access to care.
The Global Action Network for Sickle Cell & Other Inherited Blood Disorders is grateful to Senator Jane Cordy, and its member organizations in Canada for this historic and laudable initiative.
