Senator Jane Cordy introduced Bill S288- An Act recognizing October 18 of every year as the National Inherited Blood Disorders Awareness Day at the Canadian Senate on September 19, 2024. This move has made Canada a world leader and the first country in the world to recognize inherited blood disorders in this way.
It will also help to:
- Give a voice to the increasing numbers of Canadians living with Inherited Blood Disorders
- Advance advocacy initiatives to meet the needs of Canadians living with Inherited Blood Disorders
- Ensure equal and equitable access to health care services no matter where people with inherited blood disorders live in Canada
- Maximize visibility and advocacy for patients (many of whom belong to marginalized communities, lacking access to medical care);
- Raise awareness and promote better care, treatment, research, capacity-building, and education regarding inherited blood disorders across Canada
What are inherited blood disorders?
Inherited blood disorders are a group of serious blood disorders associated with significant morbidity and mortality and requiring early diagnosis and prompt implementation of comprehensive and preventive therapies.
The Global Action Network for Sickle Cell & Other Inherited Blood Disorders is grateful to Senator Jane Cordy for this historic and laudable initiative.
